Building washing by drone: when it fits and what to check

Illustration of a drone washing the facade of a tall building
The short answerWith a washing drone, water arrives through a hose from a pump on the ground, and the pilot sprays the facade from a safe distance. The method mainly suits routine washing of large, tall facades. It does not replace work that needs contact, repair or restoration.

Washing a tall building usually means rope access, a platform or scaffolding. Each adds preparation, equipment and people working at height. A washing drone changes part of that equation: the pilot stays on the ground, and the aircraft goes up to the facade.

How does it work in practice?

  1. Site survey. Check the facade, access, safety zones and water source.
  2. Preparation. Coordinate with building management, close walkways and make sure openings are shut.
  3. Washing. According to an equipment supplier's guide, the drone is connected by hose to a ground system that supplies water and limits its range, and the pilot works from a distance.
  4. Control. Photograph the result and check areas that need another pass.

According to the same guide, many companies combine the two: a drone for routine washing and a height crew for inspections and repairs. It comes from a commercial source, so match the decision to your building.

Which buildings suit it?

  • Office and residential towers with continuous facades.
  • Buildings where a platform or scaffolding is hard to place.
  • Industrial buildings, warehouses and logistics centres.
  • Halls and buildings with large roofs and surfaces.

A building with sensitive cladding, poor sealing or cracks needs checking before any spraying. Pressurised water can get through weak points, so the pressure is set according to the material and its condition.

What should you check before ordering?

  • Licence and insurance. Ask for valid documents that apply to washing work, not only to photography.
  • Permissions. Flying in an urban area and near people requires planning and sometimes approvals. Confirm with the provider what your site needs.
  • Safety below. Where people and vehicles pass, and who closes the area.
  • Water and chemicals. What is sprayed, at what pressure, and where dirty water drains.
  • Weather. Wind affects the aircraft and the spray. Ask what happens if work is postponed.
  • Measuring the result. Agree in advance what "clean" looks like and what happens with deep stains.

Common questions

Does a drone remove all dirt?

No. Deep stains, rust or old layers may need contact treatment. The site survey can identify this in advance.

Do occupants need to leave?

Closing windows and coordinating walkways is usually enough, but this depends on the building and the safety plan.
